Chapter 8

LORENZO ‘HUSTLER’ RICCI

I GRIPPED MY PHONE so tight, the edges cut into my palm. “Is she all right?”

“Yeah,” Hulk reassured me. “She’s good. Everyone else is losing their fuckin’ minds, but she’s good. Got a small bump on her head, but the airbags saved her from bein’ hurt too bad.”

Sagging against the weathered adobe siding of the restaurant I’d been eating at, I clutched my chest, wondering if I was having a heart attack. “Tell me again what happened.”

His voice deep and grave, Hulk went over the ambush that had been waiting for the girls as they were on their way to dinner with Smoke and Tom Sokolov.

Whoever planned it knew exactly who to hit, and how. Using a big, stolen truck like a battering ram, some motherfucker ran over two of the brothers on their bikes who’d been guarding the SUV’s rear. Both men were hurt, and my gut clenched as Hulk continued to explain that another truck pulled up with a shooter in the back—a shooter with an AK47. Even the SUV’s reinforced armor would have had a hard time stopping an extended barrage of those bullets.

The girls would have been in deep shit, but fuckin’ Vance—of all people—saved the day. He’d been riding in front of the women and luckily avoided being hit by the truck. Somehow, he’d managed to hit the guy with the AK47 in the head, and the other truck had taken off once they realized their gunner was down. The driver of the first truck, the one that struck the girl’s SUV, had died on impact from a broken neck, but Lyric had recognized him as one of Pastor Middleton’s men.

My hands shook as rage consumed me.

Out of the corner of my eye, I watched Mike approach me with a grim expression, his phone plastered to his ear. The overhead lights of the parking lot put his face into a deep shadow beneath the brim of his tan cowboy hat, but in that darkness I could see his eyes blazed with the same fury that filled me.

“You’re fucking kidding me. Pastor Middleton?”

“Yep.” Hulk growled out. “Don’t need to tell ‘ya Beach and Smoke are losing their minds right now.”

“I’m losin’ my fucking mind right now.” I grit my teeth, trying to keep from going ape shit. “I should have been there! I should be protecting her instead of chasing a fucking ghost across America.”

After a moment of silence, Hulk said, “If it was up to me, I’d bring you home, but Beach is gonna wanna keep you lookin’ for Middleton. He’s more determined than ever to keep the women safe from everyone and everything until the threat is neutralized. Sooner that fucker is found, sooner you’ll be comin’ home.”

“Fuck!”

A hand landed on my shoulder, and I whipped around then snarled at Mike, “What?”

His deep voice cut through my frustrated anger. “Lyric wants to talk to you.”

Right away, I grabbed the phone, handing Hulk off to Mike as I stalked a few paces away.
